Catch up day in the shop. With the weekend crew.

Sometimes we need to take every moment possible to get things done. Whether it’s fabricating new projects or shop maintenance and cleaning. Either way Bait always loves being in the shop to distract, or lay underthe spaceray, or give nudges. Happy autumn everyone.

The perg

Pergola from red grandis. From original blueprints. Homeland.

Soo busy doing new stuff!

Just wrapped up.this replacement section of hand rail in fed hill. The original.was removed many many years ago and all of the parts had been unfortunately lost. Another person tried to replace it and stopped where it got tricky I suppose. Among the problems were mismatched and incorrect balusters, replaced existing rail set at the incorrect height, a very loose wobbly 1st floor run, and nothing to go from. So I did the best I could matching in color and profiles and had to match the few balusters I needed to the mismatched existing ones. It worked out ok. Id like to do another to apply what I learned on this one..Lots of rasp, spoke shave, carving with thw grinder. Pretty fun. Check it out.

Do I really need to say it??

More shutters for another beautiful center entry colonial. Urn cutouts like original and a combination of raised panels and louvered. Some before and after. Black with white trim looks crisp and formal. A great choice by the home owner..All sandblasted Zimmerman bars, cradles and hinges. And new numbered tacks for every pair and corresponding window.

Homework….

It’s not all.just making stuff. Everything starts with a site visit..some dimensions…maybe kicking some ideas around. Then some sketches to help nail some ideas down..or I can take your drawings and build and price from there. I have probably thousands of these little sketches I do for every project I look at..Sometimes it’s as simple as some layout work on graph paper with notes to scale. Sometimes it’s cad generated..Sometimes it’s just a drawing on a shingle. These will go into a physical file with shop sketches and usually with scanned copies of these same drawings I can scribble on at the saw..plus receipts, invoices, field dimensions and notes and anything else related. I will haul that file to the site, to vendors, around the shop and even to.look.at before bed. I’ll scan these same sketches and email them to clients for approvals and for submission to various boards for approval. They’re not highly technical..They dont have to be. They get the job done. I prefer the analog environment of paper, lead, triangles and erasing shields. I feel I spend too.much time in front of a screen.. I can’t argue the benefits of digitally generating things like this because clearly the benefits are there. I just like the meditative state of being while doing it this way. It feels less.like work, and more like homework. Which i.probably hated even more! But now its nice to just sit at a table and do some work with a pencil, a coffee, and some tunes in the backround. It also puts me more in touch with the project and gives me a better understanding or proportions, materials and process. So im.already building the piece before i’ve even got a piece of lumber in the shop.

Fire rehab in Homeland

I did all.of the shutters for this home on Springlake way. Why do I hang shutters on the coldest day of the year?? 17 pair with new hinge on the jambs top..

I worked with Forethought Development to rehab the historic look.of this home after a catastrophic fire several years ago..Slow process but replacing all.of the shutters with new ones really helps finish the look..Hopefully more to come on this one.

I’m starting a new sub blog here called “things that happen outside”….

I’ll be documenting the insanity that happens on the street outside my shop..its entertaining, cringeworthy and terrifying at times..there was more this week..but i’ll upload photos etc of the things I captured..this week started off mellow with a high speed pursuit ending in a massive crash on the corner just a hundred feet from.my door. 8am. Apparently the pursuit of a murder suspect. It wrapped up with multiple cars stuck in a trench with 18” of concrete the contractor didn’t bother to have flag men for or effectively close off..these bge contractors are the absolute worst. Once at 2pm.. A second car a little later.

So……boats…

Started this project really last november..lots and lots of stuff to finish up.. Reclaimed walnut. Some inlay work. Ongoing project on a 36ft carver. Here’s basically just a partial photo dump..

New owner, new name..
